It’s a well-known social media fact that when you post on Instagram makes a difference to how many times your post gets viewed.  It also makes a difference to the audience that you’re reaching and impacts the opportunity of growing your fanbase.  For example, if you post in the middle of the night, you won’t get the engagement you wanted as most people are asleep.  That’s a very obvious example, and makes perfect sense but why is it that certain times of the day make a difference to how many views you get?  So when is the best time to post on Instagram? We’re going to give you some advice on the best times to post on Instagram.

Different Businesses Have Different Engagement Windows

best times to post on instagram 2021

Firstly, think about your brand, your audience, and their lifestyles.  Different businesses will have different times when their audience looks for what they do. As a good example, there’s no point in posting if you’re a restaurant after 11.00pm (unless you specialize in late-night dining).  You’ll have missed an opportunity earlier in the evening.  For restaurants, a good time would be around 5pm for dinner (even earlier if you want to offer an early-bird deal), or first thing in the morning at 6.00am if you’re open for breakfast. Post a fabulous image of a delicious breakfast dish and you’ll hit the sweet spot as people wake up and start thinking about what they want to eat that morning!  It’s really not rocket science and mainly common sense.  Of course, the weekends will be different to weekdays as people’s lifestyles adapt to a slower pace.

Experiment with Different Posting Times

So with the best will in the world, if you’ve got an incredible brand and amazing looking, vibrant content – if you’re not posting it at the right time, you will doubtless miss out on opportunity.  There’s been plenty of studies conducted over recent years to find out what is the best time to post on Instagram and below gives you the results.  It’s worthwhile playing around too, post different things at different times of the day to see how much engagement you get and when.  If you get more engagement in the morning than the evening, this might be your sweet spot but check, don’t just experiment once, do it over a period of a couple of weeks to spot patterns.

Think About When You Scroll Through Instagram

Instagram posting research states that the best time to get engagement is 11.00am to 2.00pm (CDT) weekdays.  Tuesday is the biggest day, possibly because Monday is notoriously a busy workday and Tuesday, people normally have their schedule organized so they have a little extra time to browse through social media.  Think about your own pattern, you likely check your social media first thing in the morning, again travelling to work (if you don’t drive!), at lunchtime and certainly after work.  You’ll check it again before you go to bed.  This is a very common pattern so use your own social media pattern first and post accordingly to see how that works.

  • Lunch breaks are notoriously popular for social media use and people use the time to scroll through Insta to see what their friends are doing as well as their favorite brands.  This is a good time to share content, it’s one of the best times to post on Instagram.
  • Remember, if you know you have a lunchtime meeting, you could schedule a post, so you don’t miss out on user engagement.
  • Other best times to post are between 7.00am and 10.30am during weekdays, you’ll pick up lots of engagement early on which will peter out as you reach mid-morning, as people get on with their day.

The Best Days and Times to Post On Instagram

We’ve also got some inside info on the best time to post on Instagram depending what industry you are in.  If you’re in tech, post anytime from 10.00am to 10.0pm – tech fans are always online as it’s what they do!  Don’t bother posting on a Sunday, they tend to take a break.

If you’re a restaurant, first thing for breakfast, around 10.00am to 1.00pm for lunchtime and again, start posting late afternoon for the evening.  For hairdressers and beauticians, start posting around Thursday for the weekend and choose early in the morning to prompt people to book their appointments in!
